Firingculpture at Cathrinesminde Bricksworks Museum
Iller Strandvej 7, 6310 Broager, Denmark - Tlf +45 7444 9474
The beautiful, recently restores brickworks buildings are very scenically situated by the inlet 'Flensborg Fjord' and function as a museum with clay pits, kneading mill, moulding hall, annular furnaces, drying shed, machines, models, tile products and furnished workers' houses. The original tileworks originates from 1732. Formerly, app. 70 tileworks were situated around the bay Flensborg Fjord. The tileworks exploited the stoneless muddy puddles of the area, and tiles from the tileworks were used for the reconstruction of Copenhagen after the fire in 1728 among other things. Cathrinesminde was taken out of service in 1969. The museum was built in the end of the 20th. century and is an interesting, historic memorial from the time, when the people of the district lived from their own subsoil.
The firing sculpture will be built at the waterfront where you access the old shipping pier. The firing sculpture is both performance and sculpture and the whole process, the building and the firing is done in public. The climax is when the sculpture, wrapped in insulation, becomes its own kiln and fires to 1100-1200 centigrade. At this stage the insulation is taken away and for short intense moments the sculpture is glowing with celestial beauty. In the twilight on the 11th of August, after 24 hours of firing, the glowing sculpture will be unveiled for the audience, and the sea and the sky will be seen under the glowing arch.

Invitation for the new firing sculpture in Iceland!

Together with 9 assistants from Iceland, Sweden, Denmark and new Zealand I will make the firing sculpture ”Displacement” in front of the Nordic House in Reykjavik. It will be built out of 4-5 tons of clay and will be glowing in front of the audience on the Reykjavik Culture Night around 10 pm on 19th of August.
The sculpture is inspired of The fact that Iceland is situated right where the Earth crusts are sliding apart and new glowing material is emerging from the core of the Earth and changes the size and the surface of the country.
My plan is to execute the firing in such a way that the fire will affect some parts of the sculpture so fierce fully that they will start to move and maybe melt. Other parts will get less heat and therefore be especially exposed to the following influence of the weather, that will do that the sculpture will be in constant change.
We will use a mixture of Danish earthenware clay and crushed Icelandic lava that in Iceland is used for road construction. When the temperature approaches 1150 centigrade, this mixture will start to melt and change its shape.
The building of the sculpture will start on the 3rd of August and the firing will begin on the 17th of August.
Thank you to The Nordic House and The Reykjavik Culture Night and also thank you to the following who has contributed to its realization: Vedstaarup Tilework, Denmark | Eimskip - Sorpa, Reykjavik | Unifrax Limited, England | Gunnar Gunnarsdottir | Restaurant Hornid | Gallery Fiskur | Halldor Forni | Sim

Testing clays for the project in Reykjavik.

My project for the Reykjavik Culture Night 19th of August is advancing. Last week I was in Iceland for preparations. My project was met with helpful interest and enthusiasm, which is very promising for its realization.
I stayed as guest at the Nordic House and together with The Culture Night the project were planned. I have chosen a spot in front of the Nordic House, at some distance, quite near the lake, with a good view from the Nordic house cafeteria.
I met with several companies, who are considering supporting the project and I have arranged for 15 m3 of firewood to be delivered on the 10th of August. I have arranged for a construction, that at the same time will protect for the weather and will act as a scene for the performance. The participating group should soon be put together and arrangements made for accomodation including meals.
Displacement is now the name of the project.

For
2006 I am planning a project for the Nordic House in Reykjavik. New developments
in the idea and construction will be used at the occasion.
”Metamorphosis”, a firingsculpture
in Iceland.
Gro Kraft, Director or The Nordic House, Reykjavik: The Nordic House will in 2006 be hosting the art project ” Metamorphosis”
with the danish artist Jørgen Hansen. The project will take place
in August 2006, will cover 2 weeks, reach its climax about midnight 19th
of August 2006 – The Reykjavik Night of Culture and result in a
claysculpture of temporary duration erected in the wetland reserve in
front of The Nordic House, visible from Reykjavik Center and The University
of Iceland.
Jørgen Hansen: My project is about change and transformation and it relates in several
ways specificly to Iceland. I experience Iceland a community with great
ability and power of transformation and I believe that it has to do with
the immense contrasts that I have experienced there. Iceland is situated
right where the slaps of the earth’s crust meet, where the gap between
them is constantly growing, where vulcans and new islands are formed.
